Your Prescription Is Only the Beginning

Buying prescription glasses is not the same as ordering an ordinary accessory. A prescription tells us the lens power you need—but it does not tell the whole story of how those lenses should be positioned in front of your eyes.

Some online eyewear companies ask customers to hold a credit card against their face while a camera estimates their measurements. It may seem convenient, but that kind of general estimate cannot capture everything an experienced optical professional considers when fitting a frame and ordering lenses.

Every face is different. Our eyes may sit at slightly different heights, our noses and ears shape how a frame rests, and even two people wearing the same frame can hold their lenses at different distances and angles. An optician evaluates the actual frame on the actual person, adjusts it properly, and then takes precise measurements—down to the millimeter.

Those measurements may include the position of each pupil, fitting height, the distance between the lenses and eyes, the tilt of the frame, and its curvature around the face. The chosen frame’s size and shape matter, too.

This precision becomes especially important with progressive and other advanced lenses. Their distance, intermediate, and reading areas must be positioned so your eyes naturally find the correct zones. Even beautifully made lenses may feel uncomfortable or perform poorly when they are not accurately fitted.

That does not mean every pair of glasses purchased online will fail. It means that convenience is not the same as customization—and a prescription alone does not guarantee a properly fitted pair of glasses.
